Halloween at Hill St.
As we get closer to the end of the year, we also find ourselves getting closer to some of the biggest seasonal celebrations. I think it is fair to say that we have firmly entered the autumnal season and so, as the leaves fall and the air turns crisp, it is the perfect time to indulge in the rich and decadent flavours of our artisan chocolates. Whilst our customers may be busy carving pumpkins, here at Hill St. our chocolatiers have been creating Halloween-themed chocolates, including our latest window display, made up of chocolate pumpkins!
Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, has deep historical roots that can be traced back over two millennia. Its origins can be found in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the winter. Samhain was celebrated on the night of October 31st, when it was believed that the boundary between the living and the dead was at its thinnest, allowing for ghosts and other supernatural beings to roam the earth.
To ward off these spirits, the Celts would carve grotesque faces into large turnips or rutabagas, placing candles inside to create eerie lanterns – a precursor to the modern jack-o’-lantern. When the Celts later migrated to what is now Ireland and Scotland, they found pumpkins to be more abundant and easier to carve, leading to the evolution of the practice into the vibrant pumpkin carving tradition we know today.
